With respect to housing, fi rst year undergraduate students need not to decide between living on-Grounds or off-Grounds: UVA requires all incoming fi rst year undergraduates to live on-Grounds. There are six areas in which first year undergraduate students may reside; interested individuals may learn about these areas at http://www.virginia.edu/housing/fy.php.
In order to apply for housing, students need to first activate their university ID at MyUV at https://myuva.virginia.edu/render.userLayoutRootNode.uP, and then complete the online First-year Housing Application, after having paid the $250 Admission deposit. The order of ones assignment is determined by a computer-generated random selection process which is held after the application deadline of June 13, 2007 and governed by the following information as entered by the Accommodations Office staff:
- Your ranking of area.
- Mutual roommate request.
- Information about smoking, study habits, and neatness preferences.
Subsequent to the order assignment process, the area assignment is completed by computer, and sent to students after July 6, 2007. More information subjects such as roommate requests, provisions for Echols or Rodman Scholars, assistance for students with disability or allergy may be found at http://www.virginia.edu/housing/faq.php?faq_id=fy.
Transfer and graduate students have an option as to whether live on-Grounds or off-Grounds. For transfer students, the on-Grounds options include Apartments, single bedrooms in a suite arrangement, residential colleges, and language houses. There are fourteen areas in which these housing options may be found; interested students may fi
nd further information on these areas at http://www.virginia.edu/housing/transfer.php, and compare these area based on the number of bedrooms, occupancy, and cost at
http://www.virginia.edu/housing/compare.php?type=transfer.
For graduate students there are three areas in which UVA offers on-Grounds housing; interested students may fi nd further information on these areas at http://www.virginia.edu/housing/grad.php, and compare them in terms of the number of bedrooms, occupancy, and cost at http://www.virginia.edu/housing/compare.php?type=grad.
With regards to off-Grounds housing, transfer and graduate students have several options. One option is the “University Forum Apartments”, which is associated with UVA, however, is not operated by the Housing Division. More information on the “University Forum Apartments” may be obtained at http://www.virginia.edu/housing/options.php?id=uforum&type=upperclass.
Another resource is the “Office of Off-Grounds Housing”, which, despite being supported by UVA, is not affiliated by the Housing Division. In the website of Office of On-Grounds Housing at http://uvastudentcouncil.com/offgrounds/, students may find valuable information about the available listings, advertise their properties, and many other housing-related issues.
Some of the rental residence providers as well as apartment complexes in Charlottesville include:
- Wade Apartments
- Wertland Square
- University Heights Apartments
- Woodard Properties
- Preston Square Apartments
- Ivy Square Realty & Mgt. Co.
- Blue Ridge Apartment Council
Irrespective of the rental residence provider or the apartment complex, the students must be aware that securing a place must be done well in advance of the date by which they intend to begin living at that place.
Assuming that the beginning of the Fall semester is the starting date for the housing contract, the students are highly recommended to have found and secured the place of their choice prior to the end of the previous Fall semester. Such urgency would enhance the possibility of students finding their desired place of residence.
